The Research Ethics & Governance Office serves the South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) which is based at Fremantle Hospital and serves the hospitals and health services across SMHS except for RPH which has its own research governance framework and HREC.
The South Metropolitan Health Service Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is constituted according to the requirements of the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia (NHMRC) and is registered as an NHMRC approved Committee.
The HREC reviews research projects involving human participants (patients or staff), their data, or tissue, in the catchment area of the South Metropolitan Health Service (excluding Royal Perth Hospital). A simultaneous review by the Research Governance Officer ascertains whether the SMHS site/s is/are able to facilitate the conduct of the research and ensure that all of the necessary approvals in place from departmental staff and/or health service executive at the site/s where the project will be conducted.
