Same Day Unit and Day of Surgery Admission Unit

About Us  Contact Us  For Patients & Clients  Our Information  For Professionals

We hope to provide you, as a patient coming in for surgery, some general information about how the Pre-admission clinic, Same Day Unit and Day of Surgery Admission (DOSA) Unit prepare and look after you before and after your operation.

You are welcome to take a tour of the Hospital Areas that you will visit on the day of your operation as well as meet some of the Hospital Staff that you may encounter. Please note that the photos will take a longer time to download.

Different Ways of Admission for Surgery

  • SDU = Same Day Unit You are admitted to hospital, have the surgery and go home on the SAME DAY.
  • DOSA = Day Of Surgery Admission You are admitted to the DOSA Unit on the day of your operation, and are transferred to a general ward after surgery to stay overnight.
  • Day before surgery You are admitted to a general ward, one or two days prior to surgery
  • Emergency Surgery You become unwell unexpectedly and admitted directly to the hospital for surgery. You will have surgery as soon as there is an operating theatre time available. There may be a bit of a wait as each patient is prioritised according to the urgency of the surgery.

Pre-Admission Visit

Prior to your surgery
Your pre-admission visit is more than just a clinic appointment. The visit enables us to assess your health needs and advise you on how to prepare for your surgery.
The process usually takes 3-4 hours and refreshments will be provided.

You will be seen by the anaesthetist, surgical team, nurse and other allied health staff, if necessary. An interpreter is also available, upon request before the clinic appointment, to facilitate communication between you and the staff.

Once the admission and relevant blood, X-ray and other special tests have been completed, you will get confirmation of the date of your operation.

Patients who are having Heart or Lung surgery will be admitted directly to Ward 8N, usually the night before surgery, while children having surgery will go directly to Ward D4.

We can also arrange for other health staff to see you if you require any of the following services:

  • Breast Cancer Counselling
  • Continence Advice
  • Diabetic Education
  • Dietitian
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Social Worker
  • Speech Therapy
  • Stoma Advice
